The UK Veterans Family Study online survey has closed!

Thank you so much to everyone who personally participated, encouraged family members to participate, helped spread the word, and who tirelessly supported our research!

What’s next?

Our research team is in the process of reviewing the data and beginning our preliminary analyses. Our goal is to have the first report detailing early findings in Summer 2023, which will be available here and on the website of Forces in Mind Trust, who provided funding for this study.

What did the study investigate?

The UK Veterans Family Study explored the experiences of spouses/intimate partners and adult children (18+ years) of UK Armed Forces Veterans and we’re recruiting participants who want to share those experiences. We wanted to understand the support, situations, and environments that have had an impact on your family’s mental health and well-being since leaving the military.

Your perspectives, positive or negative, are all important and could help the entire military community.

What did participation involve?

If you participated in the UK Veterans Family Study, you’ll have been directed to an online survey which asked you a variety of questions on your experiences.

At the end of the survey, you’ll have had the option to refer other members of your family to participate using a unique “LinkID” code. Your family members were not be able to see your responses, but this shows us that members of a family have completed the survey, allowing us to better understand how the same events might have different impacts on different family members. If you and another family member completed the study using the LinkID, you will both be eligible to receive a £20 Amazon gift card as a thank you. At the end of the survey, you may have also chosen to be entered in to a prize draw for a £50 Amazon gift card.

Currently, processing of £20 Amazon gift cards is underway through our King’s College London team and may take 1-2 weeks. The prize draw will occur after data review and winners will be notified by email.

Who took part?

Participants were eligible to take part in this study if they were:

1. A relative (e.g. spouse/partner, now adult (18+years) child) of a Veteran who has served at least one day in any branch of the UK Armed Forces/Reserve Forces, but no longer serves in either.

OR

2. A Veteran who has served at least one day in any branch of the UK Armed Forces/Reserve Forces and have since left service.

AND

3. Over 18 years old and living in Scotland, Northern Ireland, England, or Wales.

Was it anonymous?

The survey did not ask you to include any names, telephone numbers, or email addresses that are connected to your answers.

Couples or full family groups who completed the survey are only being identified using “linked data.” Watch the video to find out more about what this means.
